One of the largest solar-storage projects in China has come to actualization, with CNBM New Energy Engineering who is affiliated with Jetion Solar finishing the construction work of the project and meeting the COD at the end of September, 2020.
The project is a behemoth, clocking in at 40 MW of solar and 193 MWh of energy storage. It would be noteworthy even if it were just a storage installation, as it is larger than any such project currently operating. The project is located in Gangba County, Xigaze, Tibet, with an altitude of more than 4,700 meters and more than 3200 hours of sunlight every year. This world’s highest altitude solar-storage project was invested by China based company Dynavolt and EPC was provided by Jetion Solar.
Based on the characteristics of local electricity load and the particularity of the Tibet power grid, the project was designed as a full energy storage allocation project, the solar arrays will charge the storage during the day, and the storage will fully power the grid during the night. The storage system adopts lithium iron phosphate batteries with a capacity of 193 MWh. Until now, it is one of the world's highest altitude and largest installed capacity solar-storage projects.
It is expected that the power generation will be around 72,000 MWh per year, which is equivalent to saving 26,200 tons of standard coal, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 7,900 tons and reducing sulfur dioxide emissions by 2,400 tons. Thanks to the large-capacity energy storage system, the project can be used as a stable power source to provide electricity at night and provide clean and reliable green energy for the communities in Xigaze, which has important demonstration role for peak shaving, frequency modulation and dispatching of the Tibet grid. At the same time, this project will also make positive contributions to Xigaze's industrial development, fiscal and taxation, labor employment, and targeted poverty alleviation, and promote the development of Xigaze's surrounding industries such as agriculture and mining.
“The success of grid connection of this project further strengthens our confidence in the solar-storage development.” said Sun Jie, general manager of Jetion Solar. “Tibet is one of the regions with the richest solar energy resources in the world. Jetion Solar will continue to expand its EPC business, so that the clean energy will benefit more communities on the plateau, and also contribute to the development of Tibet in high quality way."
